KGP sets new record for lowest flaring
Providing energy safely and reliably is what our customers count on. Operating sustainably is fundamental to how Woodside delivers that performance and creates long-term value.
In 2025, we reached our target of reducing net equity Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 15% from our starting base – and we’re progressing toward our 2030 target of a 30% reduction from our starting base.
Reducing flaring is one of the practical ways we’re delivering that progress.
At Karratha Gas Plant (KGP), 2025 marked a major milestone. The plant recorded its lowest-ever annual flaring level – with flared quantities less than 10% of their peak in 2013. That performance reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 62 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent compared to the original budget plan.
This success reflects years of continuous improvement, which Matt Ladner, Senior Emissions and Production Optimisation Engineer, credits to a strong culture focused on greenhouse gas emissions reduction, safety and reliability.
“The record has been a result of a reliable plant and playing the long game in identifying and implementing flare reduction opportunities,” explained Matt.
It’s a testament to the dedication of our engineering and operations teams who have embedded low-flaring practices into daily routines and decision making.”
Flaring is used to keep our operations safe and reliable during the processing of LNG.
The flare system acts as a critical safety mechanism, operating when necessary to manage hydrocarbons and safely depressurise the facility if required.
Flaring targets are set each year based on planned maintenance activities and expected plant reliability.
In 2025, Woodside implemented solutions to reduce daily flaring at KGP by removing permanent gas supply to the flare, as well as optimised LNG plant maintenance and equipment restart improvements.
“Continually finding ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in a cost-conscious manner, on an ageing facility and smashing the previous record is something everybody should be proud of,” he said.

Woodside has a history of being an industry leader in methane reduction and managing methane emissions is a key part of our company’s climate strategy.
Our methane emissions for the year were aligned with the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative 2025 target of below 0.2 per cent.
We were the first Australasian company to sign the Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative, striving to achieve near-zero methane emissions from our operated assets by 2030.
And last year we were awarded “Gold Standard Pathway” status by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for our Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (‘OGMP2.0’) plan.
“This significant milestone reflects the efforts of so many people to deliver this sustained performance,” Matt said.
