Day in the life of a projects graduate

Meet Bhamini, a Projects Graduate

6:00am

With the aid of an energy drink and a David Goggins reel I run along the Swan River. I feel the dopamine and serotonin levels starting to kick in. There’s something incredibly satisfying about getting the blood flowing early in the day. Today also marks Day 1 of the Projects Office Step Challenge, where teams from Perth and Houston compete to rack up the most steps over the next month. It’s an awesome opportunity to meet new people from different time zones, get active and make the day a little more interesting.

7:30am

After my run, I jump on the bus to work and take a moment to check my calendar for the day. This morning I’m jamming to Save Tonight by Eagle-Eye Cherry. Once I’m at work, I dive straight into the tasks at hand. I’m a big believer in the swallow the frog approach, which essentially means tackling the hardest task first. Today, that means jumping into the NRC and GWA maintenance estimates. The scope is still coming together, so I’m sorting through a lot of documents and information to start building a coherent picture. It’s a bit of a puzzle but that’s what I enjoy about it. The best part is that Olivia, a Projects Analyst, sits near me and I know I can ask her for help if I get stuck.

10:30am

I meet up with Jaime, who works in Carbon Capture and Storage, and Caitlin, who’s in Corporate Environment. We head to the cafe on Level 2 of Mia Yellagonga for a coffee catch-up. These moments give me a chance to step away from my desk, but they also offer a peek into what’s going on in different areas of the company. It’s fascinating to see how the work we do intersects with each other and how the issues facing one area could affect mine down the line.

11:00am

Next, I jump into the Woodside Energy Climate Awareness Network (WECAN) Townhall meeting. As part of WECAN, our goal is to support Woodsiders in understanding the complexities of the climate challenge and empowering everyone to take part in real solutions. Today, the team is brainstorming ideas for WECAN merchandise for an upcoming event. As part of the committee, I get to contribute to the conversation and pitch new ideas. There’s something really rewarding about being able to take the initiative and share your thoughts with a supportive team.

12:00pm

The first-year graduates meet up for lunch on Level 2 on the days they are available. We step outside for some fresh air. I find that disconnecting from work for a bit and enjoying good company makes me more productive when I return to my desk.

12:30pm

After lunch, I shift gears to focus on something that’s incredibly important to me; workplace culture. I spend some time helping Bernadette with an initiative aimed at building a healthy office culture. Having a positive and inclusive culture at work is something I’m passionate about. I work alongside Bernadette, who is a huge inspiration to me. She has so much energy and enthusiasm, and I aspire to bring that to my own career.

1:00pm

The next few hours are all about focusing on the tasks at hand. I lock into wrapping up my NRC and GWC tasks. I also spend some time preparing for Project Controls 101 with Kevin tomorrow. Kevin, who recently returned from the US after working on the Louisiana LNG Project, has a wealth of knowledge. I’m eager to hear his insights on how the project was managed and apply that learning to the work I’m doing. Lastly, I make sure to plan for tomorrow.

5:00pm

After a solid day of work, I head to UWA for my part-time Juris Doctor studies. Today, I attend a tutorial one equity and trusts, and afterward, I head to the library to study for my mining law exam. It’s fascinating to see how my studies and work tie in together. I can take concepts from the classroom and see them in action in real-world projects.

8:00pm

Tonight, I’m off to twilight tennis training. It’s a fantastic way to unwind, have fun and get a bit of competitive energy out. Plus, it counts toward the Projects Office Step Challenge!

10:30pm

I love ending the day with a good book. Tonight, it’s Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer which is a reflective biography. I stumble across a quote in the book, ‘Happiness is only real when shared’. It’s a great reminder to end the day with gratitude for the people around me, both in my personal life and at work.
