A year (and more) of safety success at Sangomar
Sangomar’s impressive production record isn’t the only success of Senegal’s first offshore oil and gas development: in June this year, the team also achieved an outstanding safety milestone, with no recordable injuries since first oil.
The achievement reflects the proactive safety culture, continued developments in safety practices and the unwavering dedication of everyone involved.
Paul, Asset Manager for Sangomar, emphasises the importance of the milestone. "Reaching one year of operations with no recordable injuries at Sangomar is a profound testament to the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved,” Paul points out.
"This exceptional safety performance underpins our operational success and our ability to deliver reliable energy."
“From the teams on the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, the Léopold Sédar Senghor, operating 100 kilometres offshore Dakar, to the onshore support teams, every person has embraced safety protocols, looking out for one another and ensuring a secure working environment.”
In fact, Sangomar’s impressive safety record stretches much further than 12 months of operations. The Operations team took control of the FPSO on Christmas Eve 2023 and ahead of production commencing, they safely executed seven months of complex hook-up, construction and commissioning activities.
Of course, outstanding health, safety and environmental performance is not merely a statistic that occurs by chance; it represents countless hours of meticulous planning, disciplined execution and continuous training that embeds safety into every aspect of our operations. The milestone demonstrates our capability to safely and efficiently deliver major projects, even in complex deepwater environments.
Paul says the achievement directly underpins the long-term success and sustainability of Sangomar. “It demonstrates our commitment to not just meeting, but exceeding, industry standards, and is a strong foundation for the continued long-term value creation from this vital asset for both Woodside and the nation of Senegal," he notes. “People are at the heart of this success, which is the result of exceptional teamwork between Woodside, our partners at MODEC and our valued joint venture partner Petrosen.”
There are 17 nationalities and multiple companies at work on the FPSO and seamless collaboration across diverse teams, cultures and organisations has been instrumental in navigating complexity and achieving our shared goals – including safe, stable production one year after first oil.
This shared commitment to our core values has forged a strong, unified team, laying a strong foundation for Sangomar's future contributions to Senegal's energy security and economic growth.
