Steel-cutting milestone for Woodside’s Trion Project

Woodside’s Trion Project in the Gulf of Mexico passed a major milestone with a steel-cutting ceremony for the project’s floating production unit (FPU) at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

Woodside’s Trion Project in the Gulf of Mexico has passed a major milestone with a steel-cutting ceremony for the project’s floating production unit (FPU).

Celebrations for the milestone were held late last year at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, following the award of the FPU engineering, procurement and construction  contract to HHI in June 2023. Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill and EVP & COO International Daniel Kalms attended the event. They were joined by HHI President & CEO Lee Sang-kyun, Mexico’s Ambassador to Korea Carlos Penafiel Soto and Secretary of Energy Development of the State of Tamaulipas and Representative of the Governor José Ramón Silva.

Meg expressed her happiness to be back in the shipyard as CEO of Woodside for the Trion Project alongside valued partners.

The Trion field is located in the Gulf of Mexico at a water depth of 2500 m, about 180 km off the Mexican coast, and was discovered by Mexican National Oil Company PEMEX in 2012. It is a greenfield development that would represent the first oil production from Mexico’s deepwater.

Daniel explained how proud Woodside was to develop the project and the significant benefits it would bring to Mexico.

“We believe Trion will deliver economic benefits for Mexico, including jobs, local content opportunities and an estimated US$10 billion in taxation and royalties over the life of the project,” he said.

The Trion Development, a joint venture with PEMEX, is more than 15% complete, with the semi-submersible FPU expected to have an oil production capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil a day.
