Right fix at right time – AI delivers for Woodside
Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) are providing new opportunities to both support safe and reliable operations, and deliver the energy our customers need – day in, day out.
High reliability is fundamental to Woodside’s operations, and maintenance plays a key role in making that happen. By planning smarter and acting earlier, we reduce risk, improve availability and keep our assets performing at their best.
With the launch of ‘Maint Intel’ smart technology at our North West Shelf (NWS) Project, we’re changing how maintenance is planned.
Maint Intel is an AI-enabled tool that helps optimise the frequency of equipment maintenance, ensuring preventative work is scheduled when it’s needed – not sooner or later.
It recommends optimal maintenance schedules by analysing huge volumes of data and comparing maintenance plans and historical performance against our reliability targets.
This is a significant breakthrough, considering the size and complexity of our assets,” says Mike Davey, Manager NWS Reliability and Integrity.
“The safety and reliability of the NWS assets have underpinned our competitive advantage for the past 40 years.
“As we move into a new phase of off-plateau operations, we must work hard to protect this performance, while finding ways to remain cost competitive.”
The AI tool was developed by Woodside’s Digital team in conjunction with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in India and was first tested and proven on the offshore Angel platform, with rollout scheduled for our other assets globally this year.
AI technologies were used to analyse maintenance records, identify equipment failure modes, and feed intelligence into advanced statistical models that recommended optimal maintenance intervals.

According to Inci Hawke, NWS Offshore Technical Lead, collaboration with Digital to design the desired outcomes delivered big benefits.
“By working with the Digital team and AWS AI experts in India, we cut model processing time from five days to under two hours,” Inci notes.
“This has resulted in a considerable reduction in unnecessary activities, leaving the teams time for other important work.”
AWS has partnered with Woodside for more than five years and this collaboration has streamlined delivery processes, enabling faster implementation and earlier business gains.
Andrew Melouney, VP Digital, believes integrating AI into our maintenance strategies is a major win for Woodside.
“By combining AI and analytics, we’re optimising asset management and building a global digital foundation that we can expand across our sites driving efficiency, safety and long-term value," Andrew declares.
