Onslow kids discover Plant to Plate

As part of our commitment to the communities where we operate, Woodside supports a Plant to Plate program where children at Onslow Primary School learn about hygiene, growing vegetables and cooking healthy meals.

The seaside town of Onslow is located 300 kilometres south west of Karratha in Western Australia. Our Macedon gas processing plant is a 15-minute drive from the town.

As part of our commitment to the communities where we operate, Woodside supports a Plant to Plate program where children at Onslow Primary School learn about hygiene, growing vegetables and cooking healthy meals.

"It started back in 2019, we just wanted to do something different. So, we chatted with the Compass chefs and the local school teachers about setting this up and it was a huge success. It's a great way Woodside can directly contribute to the local community and make a positive and lasting impact on these kids," said Gary Mitchell, Onshore Installation Manager, Macedon Operations.

Every fortnight during morning recess, chefs from Eurest Support Services (owned by Compass Group) impart essential culinary skills to around 15 children at the school's purpose-built kitchen.

"It's so they can have a lifetime skill and it's fantastic seeing the smiles on their faces. It'd be great if it spurs their interest in joining the hospitality industry," said Philip Shadlow, Manager Compass Group.

“The cooking classes run by Compass Group chefs through the support of Woodside, provide our students with hands on skills and knowledge to be able to prepare healthy meals. It also supports the links between our school garden and the kitchen,” Joel Yates, Deputy Principal Onslow Primary School.

The Plant to Plate classes have been so successful, that they will soon be extended to kids at the local high school.

 What the kids say:

“I have enjoyed cooking because I have learned how to make delicious foods. The thing I like the most are the chefs, they are kind and funny.” Paisley (Year 4)

“I have enjoyed cooking because you always make yummy food and it is really fun getting to pick the stuff we need from the garden.” Connor (Year 4)

“I have REALLY enjoyed cooking because we make yummy food together. At first when we made pumpkin scones I thought I wouldn’t like it because I don’t like pumpkins, but when we made it and ate it, it was so yum!” Natasha (Year 4)
