Cheers to 20 years of volunteering

After 20 years and more than 135,000 hours worth of giving back by thousands of staff, we can truly say Woodsiders are volunteer veterans.

Michelle Grady, VP Corporate Affairs, explains why the company supports this worthy initiative.

“Volunteering is a great way to make a positive impact and 20 years ago, we became one of the first Australian companies to offer volunteering leave,” Michelle notes.

To mark two decades of volunteering, last month more than 100 Woodsiders gave up their time for great causes.

Here's a snapshot of their global impact:

  • Houston-based employees supported Target Hunger, by working in the fields and packing food hampers in the warehouse to help local low-income families.
  • Our Mexico City colleagues supported a local girls’ orphanage, giving the interior a refresh and adding their own uplifting messages.
  • Karratha colleagues cooked up 85 meals for the Salvation Army, spreading warmth and nourishment to needy residents.
  • Our team in Tampico, on Mexico’s East Coast, worked with local beneficiaries to brighten up a community hub.
  • At Mia Yellagonga, our people assembled thousands of healthy relationship packs for WA Aids Council and hundreds of period poverty packs for Days for Girls.

These are just some of the positive impacts our volunteers are making around the world as we attempt to make our 20th year our biggest ever.

Tina Williams, CEO of Volunteering WA reports that since 2010, the number of Woodside volunteers has risen dramatically – from a few hundred to several thousands. And the impact is proportional. “When you have a team of people that are dedicated to do a particular role for an afternoon or a day, the work that they can get done is immense,” Tina points out.

Michelle proudly acknowledges the growing participation of Woodsiders: “I'm delighted to share that last year more than 55% of our employees volunteered around the world. “It's a fantastic achievement, but we're striving for an even bigger contribution in 2025.”
